We want this website to be usable by everyone. Here is what we have built in, and how to tell us when we can do better.
The accessibility toolbar
Every page carries a floating accessibility button in the bottom-left corner. Open it to turn on the options that suit you. Your choices are remembered on this device and applied straight away, on every page, until you turn them off.
- Larger text: step the whole site up one or two sizes.
- High contrast: darker text and clearer links for easier reading.
- Underline links: make every link stand out from the surrounding text.
- Readable font: swap to a plainer, more legible typeface with a little more spacing.
- Pause motion: stop animations and movement across the site.
- Highlight focus: a bold outline that follows the keyboard as you tab through the page.
A Reset button clears all of your choices at once. The toolbar is fully keyboard operable, and none of it relies on any outside service.
What we have built into the site
We have aimed this website at the principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We do not hold a formal accessibility certification or audit, but we have designed and tested toward these goals:
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the site honours it automatically, before you touch the toolbar.
- Text colours are chosen for contrast against their backgrounds, with the high-contrast option available on top.
- The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops, so nothing is cut off or trapped off-screen.
- Meaningful photographs carry alternative text; decorative images are marked so they do not add noise.
- Proper headings and page landmarks so screen readers can move through the content in a sensible order.
- A logical tab order, a skip link to the main content, and visible focus states, so the site can be used without a mouse.
